The Classical Homicidal Chauffeur Differential Game
The Homicidal Chauffeur differential game is often mentioned in the literature but the game's
complete solution is not readily available. In this talk, the complete solution process of the Homicidal
Chauffeur differential game is illustrated for the parameter range in the heart of the speed ratio - capture
radius parameter space initially investigated by Isaacs, and referred to by Breakwell and Merz as the
classical Homicidal Chauffeur differential game. Some salient features of the solution of this foundational
differential game are highlighted and some popular misconceptions are dispelled. This tutorial talk fills
a gap in the literature on pursuit-evasion differential games. Keywords Pursuit-Evasion, Homicidal Chauffeur

PhD thesis by A. Merz „The homicidal chauffeur – a differential game“
Merz’s thesis is perhaps the most outstanding research in the field of differential games devoted to application-oriented problem: A car with a constant linear velocity and a bounded radius of turn tries as fast as possible to capture a non-inertial, moving with a bounded speed object to a specified neighborhood. The problem is described by R. Isaacs in his book „Differential games“, but it was Merz who fully investigated this problem. He divided the two-dimensional set of problem parameters into 20 parts and described solution features for each part. The dissertation summary was published by Merz in the form of a two-page article. The thesis itself was available only in the Stanford University library.
A report on the thesis will be made at a session dedicated to the memory of A. Merz.

Works of A.W.Merz from the 1970s and 1980s
A review of the results obtained by A.Merz after defending his PhD Thesis is given. The main focus is done on the papers "The Game of Two Identical Cars", "Maximum-Miss Aircraft Collision Avoidance", and "Football as a Differential Game". The report will be made at the session dedicated to the memory of A.Merz.
