Routing and Energy Management in Internet Networks

    • Bernardetta Addis, prés., Politechnico di Torino
    • Giuliana Carello, Politecnico di Milano
    • Antonio Capone, Politecnico di Milano
    • Brunilde Sansò, GERAD, Polytechnique Montréal

We discuss the issues of energy management in Internet networks and propose two models, one with fixed routing and the other with variable routing. Comparative results will be presented and discussed.

Energy Efficiency and Cellular Network Planning

    • Silvia Boiardi, prés., Polytechnique Montréal
    • Antonio Capone, Politecnico di Milano
    • Brunilde Sansò, GERAD, Polytechnique Montréal

We present a model for the energy efficient design and operation of cellular networks. We found that substantial energy savings can be achieved when managing the system at little increase cost at the planning stages.

A Model for Energy Management in Wireless Mesh Networks

    • Antonio Capone, prés., Politecnico di Milano
    • Filippo Malandra, Politecnico di Milano
    • Brunilde Sansò, GERAD, Polytechnique Montréal

Wireless mesh networks are increasingly popular given the flexibility that they allow for wireless operation. In this talk, we deal with the issue of energy management and investigate the feasibility of an on-line energy-efficient operation. An optimization model will be proposed and the impact of its different features on the operation will be assessed.

Models and Methods for Energy-Aware Traffic Engineering in IP Networks

    • Edoardo Amaldi, Politecnico di Milano
    • Antonio Capone, Politecnico di Milano
    • Luca Giovanni Gianoli, prés., Politecnico di Milano
    • Luca Mascetti, CERN

We address the problem of optimizing the energy consumption in IP networks operated with a shortest path routing protocol. We propose some heuristics where an energy-aware configuration of the link weights is performed, in order to switch-off the underutilized network elements (routers and links), and to optimize the network congestion.
