SmartDesc: An integrated macroscopic-microscopic mean field control based methodology for demand dispatch programs
SmartDesc is an architecture for harnessing the demand dispatch potential of millions of energy storage capable electric devices such as electric water and space heaters, situated at participating customer sites. It combines aggregate load model based optimal target generation, with individualized device control laws based on mean field game theory.

Demand response for residential electric water heaters to balance the load in the presence of renewable resources
The renewable energy resources have been of considerable and growing interest due to their increasing use in the electrical power grids. Demand response via thermostatically controlled loads has proven to be a promising approach in supporting the operation of such power grids with intermittent supply. A multi-stage stochastic optimization program is developed to guide the demand of an aggregate model of electric water heaters. The model computes the optimal day-ahead target profile of electric water heaters power consumption in order to mitigate fluctuations of renewables and minimize the peaks of the load curve. Computational results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed model.

A Java-based framework to simulate the performance of a RF-mesh smart meter communication system for smart grid applications
Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMIs) lay the foundation of many smart grid applications. Despite their low capacity, RF-mesh systems are an increasingly popular AMI. The simulator presented in this work aims at analyzing the performance of this kind of system, in order to define the range of possible smart grid applications.

Kolmogorov equations based assessment of the feasibility of hourly aggregate electric water heaters temperature targets within load management programs
A feasibility tester for the sequence of mean electric water heaters temperature targets dictated by a macroscopic level load management optimizer, and to be tracked through decentralized water heater controls is presented. Analysis is based on Kolmogorov types of PDE’s associated with the random on-off hot water demand processes.
