Mixed integer nonlinear optimization in energy systems: old and new challenges
Abstract: mathematical optimization has been used extensively by utility companies to make decisions concerning short to long term problems, like, for example, the optimization of energy production or of plant maintenance. In particular, several optimization problems in energy systems can be modeled as mixed integer nonlinear programs, where both nonlinear objective or constraint functions and integrality requirements on (some of) the variables represent the main challenges to solving effectively such problems. In this talk, we focus on the nonlinearities of such problems and overview methodologies to tackle them.
