A Tutorial on Simulation-based Optimization using System Dynamics: A Case Study in Infrastructure Asset Management

  • Fuzhan Nasiri, intervenant(e), Concordia University

In this tutorial, the basic elements of a system dynamics model using various examples in infrastructure asset management are explored including conceptual causal modeling, stock-and flow, delays, and feedback mechanisms. On that basis, a step-by-step procedure is followed to develop a system dynamics model for a case study of infrastructure maintenance management incorporating the elements discussed. The model is first simulated to explore some strategic/operational insights paving the path for using the model for a simulation-based optimization setting to direct infrastructure integrity and maintenance costing objectives subject to various budget, technical, and timing constraints. The tutorial will provide a step-by-step introduction on how to develop and use system dynamics models (in Vensim platform) to combine dynamic scenario analysis/reality checks resulting from the simulations with parametric optimization for asset management applications.
